Privacy notice
What we collect, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do about it.
Who we are
OBLit rents portable power banks from self-service charging stations in venues and at events across South Africa. In the language of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), we are the responsible party for the personal information described here.
You can reach us at info@oblit.co.za or 0711815248. Our address is Sea Point, Cape Town, 8005.
What we collect
When you message us
If you use the contact form we collect your name, email address, the subject you chose, your message, and your phone number if you give us one. We also record the date and the IP address the message came from, which helps us deal with spam and abuse.
When you rent a power bank
Renting requires your cellphone number, which we verify with a one-time code by SMS. We record which station you rented from, which unit you took, when you took it and when it came back.
Payments are handled by Payfast, a South African payment provider, not by us. You enter your card details on their systems. We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded and a reference for it. We never see or store your card number.
When you book an event or advertise with us
We collect the business contact details you give us, along with the details of the event or campaign itself.
Finding a station near you
On the rental page you can ask your phone to sort the station list by distance. If you allow it, your browser reads your position and compares it against the station locations on your own device.
Your location is never sent to us. We do not receive it, store it or log it, and refusing the request costs you nothing — the list still works, and you can search by name or type the station code instead.
Automatically
Our web host keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses and the pages requested. These are ordinary technical records kept for security and troubleshooting.
Why we collect it
- To answer your enquiry — we cannot reply without a way to reach you
- To provide the rental: verifying it is you, tracking the unit, and closing the rental when it comes back
- To take payment and to release your deposit
- To send you service messages about a rental in progress, such as a reminder before your time runs out
- To provide support when something goes wrong
- To keep the accounting and tax records the law requires us to keep
- To protect the service against fraud, abuse and theft of our equipment
We do not sell your personal information. We do not send marketing messages unless you have asked us to.
Who we share it with
Only with the parties we need to in order to run the service, and only what they need:
- Payfast, to take payment and release deposits
- BulkSMS, to deliver one-time codes and rental reminders — they receive your cellphone number and the message itself
- Our web host, which stores the site and its data
- Professional advisers such as accountants, where required
- Authorities, where the law requires it or where we need to protect our rights
Some of these providers process information outside South Africa. Where that happens, we use providers who are bound to protect it to a standard comparable to POPIA.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries: up to two years after we last spoke, so we have context if you come back
- Rental records: for as long as the law requires us to keep transaction records, currently five years
- One-time codes: minutes — they are deleted once used or expired
- Server logs: a short rolling period set by our host
When we no longer need information for these purposes, we delete it.
Cookies
This website uses one cookie, and only on pages with a form. It is a session cookie that keeps your form submission secure and prevents forged requests. It disappears when you close your browser.
We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and there are no third-party analytics or advertising scripts on this site. That is why you are not being asked to accept a cookie banner.
How we protect it
The site is served over an encrypted connection. Access to enquiry and rental records is limited to people who need it to do their job. Card details never reach our systems, because Payfast handles them directly.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affected your personal information, we would notify you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct anything that is wrong or incomplete
- Ask us to delete information we no longer have a reason to keep
- Object to us using your information in a particular way
- Withdraw consent you previously gave, without affecting what we did before you withdrew it
- Complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) if you think we have handled your information badly
Email info@oblit.co.za to exercise any of these. We will respond as quickly as we reasonably can. We may need to confirm who you are first, so that we are not handing someone else's information to the wrong person.
Some information we are obliged to keep — accounting records, for example — so we cannot always delete everything on request. If that applies, we will tell you what we are keeping and why.

Changes to this notice
We update this notice when what we do changes. The date at the top tells you when it last changed. If a change materially affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you rather than rely on you noticing.
A note on the rental sections.
Stations are still being placed, so the rental service is not yet open to the public. The sections above describe how it works and who is involved, and they apply from the day the first station goes live.
